Day 96: Derby WA

We have reached Derby after a pleasant uneventful trip.  Our first night out of Lake Argyle was Leycesters rest area on the Ord River, this river flooded in the last wet season and as you can see from the photos it did a lot of damage.  I think the flood we had in 2008 was only a trickle compared to the width and force behind this one.

this is both sides of the causeway, it's approx. 300mtrs wide and the flood was possibly a kilometer or more at it's widest point.

The water was over the banks on either side if this van in the flood

Tuesday we stopped for lunch at Turkey Creek, not much there and then we stopped at Halls Creek information centre to pick up a doll for Gail (they have the cutest aborigine dolls there, made locally).  Mary Pool Rest Area was our stop for the night, this was quite a nice spot except for the dust, it was rather large, I think there were about 30 vans & tents overnight but no one was on top of each other.  It is definitely a place to recommend to others.  There is the river if you are game to swim in, there are signs up about crocs, I walked along it away but found no evidence of crocs but it had the most amazing sunset.  Met some people from Sydney that have been travelling since April, they came around the bottom and are heading the way we came, they were saying that they’ll be glad to get out of WA as it is way too expensive because of the mining and does not cater to the grey nomads, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Wednesday we didn’t travel far as we stopped at Fitzroy Crossing to use the internet for awhile (this is a place we’ll come back to) then travelled another 88 klm to Ellendale rest area for the night, it’s not a very shady spot but with solar panels we don’t want shade too much, it is large with plenty of room and easy access for the 5th wheeler and lots of friendly bird life.

That's all for today, we are having a couple of quiet days the we're travelling to the Horizontal Falls on Sunday so I will post all the photos on Monday for you to see, until then stay well.
