Day 92?: Kununurra

Our week at Lake Argyle has been busy but also relaxing. It began with us booking in on Monday and while I was paying for our week Jim & Gail arrived, which was a nice surprise.  They stayed the night then left to go onto Kununurra.  After we set up and had lunch we all drove down to the picnic area at the bottom of the dam wall, it’s nice there, but nothing out of the ordinary, then it was back up to the dam wall itself. Considering the size of Lake Argyle and the amount of water contained, (24 times the size of Sydney Harbour now but immediately after the last wet season it was 54 times as big) the dam wall is not that great however it is still impressive.  We were told we could swim in the lake at the boat ramp so our next stop was the boat ramp, it wasn’t very inviting so we went back to the camp area and the pool at the top of the cliff, now this was impressive as you can see in the photos. Sunset found us sitting on the cliff drinking wine and taking in the tranquillity and atmosphere, it has to be seen to be believed.

The view from the spa pool, isn't it great, just what every home should have

Tuesday we had a 5 hour river cruise which covered 100 klm. of the lake, we saw rock walla, euros, crocodile and a lot of bird life along with fish feeding and a swim in the lake at sunset, it was great.

Wednesday we travelled back into the Northern Territory to have a look at The Zebra Rock Mine & Gallery, these rocks are only found in the area around Lake Argyle and when they flooded the valley they submerged a large quantity of it however we were told there is still a lot to be mined.  Kim & Ruth the owners of the mine have only been open as a tourist attraction since the beginning of the dry season and have had a great response.  Kim is the artist and has done the carvings.

this is Zebra rock in it's original state after it has been mined

and these photos show what it can become with a little bit of effort

This is Kim the man along with his partner Ruth who own and run the mine on their own, it'swell worth the visit.
Thursday we walked 4.5 klm. return to the old Argyle Homestead which was moved to higher ground when they flooded the valley.
Friday we walked to the top of the Ord River Gorge which was a 3.4 klm. return trip walk, these walks are not the best walks we have been on, they are only tracks and we followed one that I think was a track made by Kangaroos because it didn’t go anywhere (they are good exercise though) and the view is spectacular.
I'm running low on battery now so I'll add more photos on Monday before we leave Kununurra and update you on ourtrip to Wyndham.
Stay well  from the happy travellers.
